Come to my place and we can drive down in my truck. Saves some gas for you, and no boring lonely arse car ride...It's an hour from my place and I know the streets there - I was RIGHT THERE looking for a Target yesterday.

Are there any real robotics at the BotCon? I've been looking for a place to try out my battle bot. It's not a winner, but it's still be fun to try.

It's an hour from my place man, makes it WAY too short a distance for me not to go. Offer stands! Hey Radar, there's a robotics show in Chicago on the 23rd of Sept. at the Rosement Convention Center. It's there every year - I go because of the job - I sell robotics, and used to design cartesian gantries. There's a BIG one in LA (isn't that where you're hailing from?) in february. I'll buy you lunch if you want to show up...it's called APEX..go to www.smta.org or www.ipc.org for info.

That looks cool for industry stuff, but I didn't see anything about combat robotics. Do you build? I've recently been throwing the idea around of making either an animatronic or remote control 2' tall Obi-Wan Kenobi Attacktix figure.

I can't talk about any robots I've built, sorry man. But I've never built any robots. And I wouldn't admit if I did. So, no, I've never built any robots other than industrial cartesian gantries, using IHK and THK steel rail systems, and parker compumotors driving X and Y axis archemedes screws to convey a 25 pound payload for automatic inspection of silicon wafers and other microstructures (the payload had a sony CCD camera on it).
There used to be a really cool company called TurboThrust, they make REALLY cheap linear motors with INSANE acceleration rates, with accuracy down to the micron level. Really nice gear. If I ever HAD built a robot, it would've incorporated one of those systems in a gauss weapon....thing would've run off of a 12V car battery and shot a ferrous neomydium projectile at 4500 feet per second, and penetrated 25" of hardened steel armor. Theoretically.

Mine just hits things with a hammer when it spins around in circles. But, I can theoretically build one for about $30, but it's not nearly as cool as your concept bot.
Anyway, we're super off topic now. But thanks for the chat, it's been fun.

Hmm...after looking over the information here, I'm really tempted to go to the Saturday tournament. I wonder if I should be presumtuous enough to try to make arrangement to stay overnight and play on Sunday, too I hope they don't try to limit the Attacktix tournament to TF-only figures, as I'd really like to see how they'd play against my Star Wars figures in a tournament setting. Joe (or anyone else), do you happen to know if there's any information about the format of the tournament above and beyond what's listed in their brochure? I'd be curious to know if there are any figure limits or the like, and whether it'll be the standard 100-point Hasbro-style tourney.

As of right now, Hasbro is not sure WHO this "BRAND MANAGER" is that will be there to play... "hmmm" indeed!

YB - You and Steve can stay at my place (it's an hour from the Convention Center) either on the couch or on the recliner. We can head back on Sunday and do a two-fer if you so desire. I MAY make you help me paint the bathroom though!

In reality, I have a BIT of experience in building robotics; I have 4 designs I'm working on: The gauss robot as described above, for anti-armor application. A remote controlled perimeter defense turret armed with a 30-cal minigun and a TOW 2-pack A non-lethal mine network for area denial (southern border) for illegals A stealth armor for soldiers - basically a LED and micro-camera array that reads images from the front and displays them on the rear, allows near-invisibility to all spectrums other than IR.

Aww - crapadoodle. I thought that the $9 entry to the sales floor would be sufficient for the tournament, but it looks like it won't be. Unfortunately, with all of the moving expenses I've incurred, there's no way I can afford to spend $159, just for a tourney. Sorry, guys
