There's something lost now, I think, when watching Episode V---there's no shock or amazement when Vader says, "I am your father." After Empire Strikes Back hit the local drive-in theaters in 1980, I remember arguing with my friends for two years about whether Vader was lying! (I was, by the way, wrong.) Until that point, no one suspected that there was more to Vader than the traditional, one-dimensional villain. (I mean, I guess that the closing moments, with Luke saying, "Father," were supposed to confirm the truth of this revelation---but my seven-year-old mind simply couldn't wrap itself around the idea that Vader was Luke's father.) I had thought that he was some sort of robot (hence my fallacious arguments about Luke's immediate progenitor). Now, to those that have grown up with Episodes I through III, the full impact of George's masterstroke is lost.
