What are your guys thoughts on hacking the Wii? I've got some legal concerns, but as I understand it, if you have a purchased copy of a game, you can back it up. I'm not sure if the format matters. If I have an Sega game, can I make a Nintendo copy? I'm not sure. My wii has been hacked for almost as long as I have owned it. I look for ways to modify or hack just about every electronic device I own. The most common misconception I see about hacking, is that the hacking itself is illegal. Once you buy a wii, you can do what ever you want to it. You can paint it funny colors, rip out all its guts and wear it as a hat, or install unlicensed third party software on it. The part that gets you in to the illegal bits, is running copyrighted material that you do not own. And this can include roms, or copied games. My wii is "soft" modded, meaning it is 100% completely original hardware-wise. I just installed other software that allows the wii to do things it couldnt before. Like running roms, cheating apps, and even playing DVD movies. Anyone can mod their wii in this manor, its pretty easy, and I have never heard of anyone damaging their wii from attempting (although fears of doing so are rampant). This doesnt void your warranty, as the software can be removed easily. But Its not good for running "backup" games. There is a way to run back ups on a soft modded wii, but I have tried and tried, and cannot get it to work.... While searching all over the internet for a solution to my problem, I found there are many more that have the same problem, and in fact there were very few that actually claim to have gotten it to work. You can also "hard" mod your wii, which involves installing different components known as "mod chips" into the wii. This is actually the best way to mod your wii, but its also the riskiest. You risk damaging your wii during installation (involves soldering), and it obviously voids your warranty. This also makes it much easier to run backed up games, as your wii DVD drive will now run any DVD you put into it. However, making a back up game is extremely cumbersome. You need special software, and even a very specific DVD burner (thats not all that easy to come by). So, there are my thoughts on the world of wii hacks/mods... To put it a bit more simple. If you are wanting to run some old classic NES, SEGA, or what ever blast from the past, go with a soft mod and emulators. The wii brew site is actually your best source of information for this kind of wii hacking. If you want to run back up wii games, go with a hard mod. But be prepared to run the gauntlet when it comes to actually making those back ups. And to paraphrase the legality issues.... Modding your wii = legal Running copyrighted material you do not own = illegal (but if your not selling it, whos gonna catch you or even care?) lol

People tell me I over think legality, but I question if one can legally download a game that they purchased cross platform. If I bought the Megaman anthology for the xBox, can I download ROMs for all the Mega Man games included in it for the Wii legally? I know it is an unusual hangup of mine, but it is a concern to me.

Oh wow, I see what you are doing here.... I really dont know.
I am leaning toward saying that if you bought a megaman xbox game, then it would only be legal to download a copy of the same game/format, so only an xbox megaman game.... But I really have no way of backing that up, and Im not even sure where to go look for the answer either. lol
I am of no help.

Direct copy Wii games
Any possible way I could directly copy Wii games without a special drive or dumping it over Wi-Fi? I want to copy my cousin's Pokemon Battle Revolution(I sold mine for Brawl) to a DVD for the backup-loader, just in case I want to play some day. Nero won't recognise it, neither will anything I have? Any special DVD copier?
