Are formations purely for defense, or can you attack from them?
I have a hard enough time aiming with a lone figure, I can't imagine trying to shoot from a formation. I've also gotten pretty good with strikers, but still can't really fathom trying to swing out of a four figure formation.
Do you guys do this, or do you break formation to attack?

It's possible to shoot from formation (especially when you've got figures in front with nice launchers), and one of my favorite formations from which to shoot consists of gold-based Nute Gunray being held between the two arms of a Destroyer Droid However, I always peel my strikers out of formation one by one when they get ready to attack (and sometimes inch the formation back, too). This keeps the formation from being subjected to a similar attack on my opponent's next turn.

If you have a steady "base turning" hand it is possible to strike from formation albeit dangerous. I like to place my genral Grievous on the right of my formation and my bosk on the left so i can fire them both with ease.

I don't like it. I prefer to put my face right into the game. My eyeball should be no more than 3 inches from the back of the gun. I want to get my hands moving my figures freely.
Plus, I find that most people have difficulty shooting effectively, so I'd rather avoid giving them better chances to hit something.

Formations are deadly effective. See below:
270 Degree Fields of fire, multiple attackers; 200 point match.
....\ | / / ......\1 / / ......2 3 / .....4 5 6 / A ...7 8 9 0 BC
1 = Anakin S1 Force Blaster 2 = Gold Nute 3 = Tarkin 4 + 6 = Wicket 5 = Jedi Knight 7 = Grievous BG 8/9/0 = Jedi knights A=Wicket B/C = Battle Droids
Keep some battle droids backup as well as a destroyer for when Anakin dies. /, \ and | illustrate directions of fire

It did seem difficult to attack from formation, and you guys seem to echo that. Its not that big of a deal in our games, since we haven't been using them extensively, mostly because we can't attack from them. Tim and Abel sometimes stack figures way in the back that they don't plan on attacking with, but they don't really use formations other than that, since Tim doesn't use strikers, and Abel only uses the best of them like S2 starter Obi-Wan, S4 Vader, and Yoda and lets them cross the table solo.
I'm pretty much the only person who uses formations, and even then only to advance packs of strikers across the table. I'll hide some of my shooters behind other figures, but I never really stack them.

Oblivion, you might want to try using Flying Fett in a formation. He's pretty much the only launcher that can effectively attack while positioned smack in the middle of a defensive formation. And I'm getting better aiming with him while in mid air (which can be very tricky), but so far he's very effective if you shield him properly in a formation.

AWOL - There's a trick to get consistency - if you stack him behind a figure, say Vader S4, put his feet (or his butt-I stack him behind a JK and he sits on his shoulders) so the height and angle are the same every time.
