I just played a four round tournament using every Marvel figure I own at least once. I have all 18 random booster figures, as well as the Ghost Rider and Marvel Heroes starters. Here are my rankings and comments based on the four games(or more) I played with every figure, worst to first:
Rankings:
1. Sabertooth
2. Ghost Rider
3. Pole-Swinging Spider Man
4. Beast
5. Western Ghost Rider
6. Daredevil
7. Elektra
8. Wolverine(prodder)
9. Blackheart
10. Green Goblin
11. Hulk
12. Abigor
13. Captain America
14. Thing
15. Gambit
16. Mystique
17. Avengers Spider Man
18. Venom
19. Magneto
20. Electro
21. Web-Blast Spider Man
22. Pyro
23. Thor
24. Wolverine(striker)
25. Doctor Octopus
26. Punisher
#26 Punisher--This figure more than any other seemed to be more of a handicap than a help. It is expensive at 30pts, has bad defense, and I've been finding that Last Stand is one of the worst powers in the entire game. Thanks to needing to be alive until the end, he has to hide and not help the attack, and if he dies too early he's wasted points. It isn't even close to being worth 30pts, and Punisher seemed like a Trojan Horse that dragged its team down.
#25 Doctor Octopus--There were 15 teams the Sinister Syndicate team featuring Doctor Octpus was facing. A grand total of four of them had figures from either the Marvel Knights or Spider Man factions. Therefore, against 11 out of 15 teams, Doctor Octopus had no special power. For 30pts, thats not good enough. Sure he has a decent strike, but a 30pt figure with a non-existent special power is a handicap. Doctor Octopus gets ranked higher than Punisher thanks to being able to advance and attack and at least be a threat on the table.
#24 Wolverine(striker)--Marvel Heroes starter set Wolverine is less than the sum of his parts. None of his characteristics are by themselves bad, but added together amount to one of the worst Marvel Figures. He has a below average strike, which isn't a good start. He doesn't have great defense. He's 30pts, so he's on the expensive side. His special power is the killer though, as while its a strong special power with a high percentage, a 30pt cost is a bad fit for a figure that supports leaders, which tend to be 30-40pts themselves. Added together, I have to rank this Wolverine towards the bottom.
#23 Thor--Thor's Thunderclap actually won a game for me, and that puts him above the bottom three. Using him incorrectly as a backwards uppercut, he can kill things. He's got a large base at least, and can fit on teams better than Wolverine and his special power has proven occasionally effective. He's still too expensive for what he is, and isn't a great figure.
#22 Pyro--There isn't anything special about Pyro. He just doesn't have that certain something that makes him worth the 20pts he costs, compared with other 20pt figures. He has two 20pt figures among his faction that easily overshadow him. Shootback is nice paired with the powerful shooting Magneto, but that pairing just isn't cost effective.
#21 Spider Man(Web Blast)--I actually like the Web Blast. Its easily more powerful than any of the Star Wars energy blasts or Gambits(I'm not familiar with Hammerhead). Its still a notch below the Transformers Energy Blast, since even Super Optimus Prime's heavy shot will easily travel farther without hitting the table, and is easier to hit things at range. Two things kill Spider Man. First is the special power Stun(Leader). I don't care for Stun to begin with, and in four games this power never had any effect on the game, and I wouldn't expect it to have an effect very often in the future either. Second is the existence of Armored Spider Man, which I don't have. He's 20pts instead of 30pts, has a VASTLY superior special power, and just looks cool. The effectiveness of his bullet and the large base give him #21, but this figure isn't that great.
#20 Electro--Some people may be surprised to see Electro this low. A 10pt, 6 speed, medium missile launcher with a quality special power would seem to be destined for the top half of Marvel, but based on my experience, it isn't. Some of that is just the quality of the figures above it. Most of it is that in about 12 games played with up to 4 Electros on a team, I was never able to hit anything that wasn't within 5 tix. I just can't aim this guy to save my life, and I do tip the base off of the table to aim up and down. If I can learn to aim this guy, he'd be much higher. As long as I can't hit anything with Electro, he ranks towards the bottom.
#19 Magneto--I played four games with Magneto, and not being able to eat a 10pt figure really does kill him the way you'd expect. I've also noticed that his big heavy bullet seems to randomly not kill things. I think it has to do with the wedge shape, as sometimes on what seems like a solid hit, the missile just gets deflected to the side and doesn't kill the target. Magneto failed to distinguish himself.
#18 Venom--Venom isn't bad, he just doesn't have any strong qualities to make him special. He is an uppercut striker, which is just so-so, and he's not a gamebreaker at 30pts and an above average special power. Nothing really wrong with Venom, but nothing really right either.
#17 Avengers Spider Man--This is a 12 speed 10pt striker, which would seem to absolutely not belong in the bottom half, but I've noticed two really nasty problems with this figure. First off, his arm tends to rise during the strike. Its high to begin with, and rising higher tends to hit high and knock figures over and not send them into other figures. On short figures, Spider Man can miss entirely, as my Spider Mans in four tries missed three times in trying to kill Minicons. Strikers should not miss. His second nasty habit is that more than any other figure in the game, Spider Man tends to kill more of your figures when he dies. His outstretched arm has a nasty habit of hitting your figures as he dies, and since he's a featherweight, he tends to fly far, even when killed by missiles. I killed a Spider Man with Super Optimus Prime and managed to send it flying into another Spider Man 3-5tix away, killing them both. His Evade(Avengers) isn't really special either.
#16 Mystique--Mystique is really interesting, and I've actually gotten her special effect to work a few times. As long as your opponent isn't a pro at getting multiple kills, Mystique is great at hanging a little behind the front lines, and then stealing your opponents strikers after they attack. She ranks in the middle though thanks to low offense with a little missile, and a lackluster special power.
#15 Gambit--Gambit is a good figure, don't let his middle ranking confuse that. He gets his middle ranking from the fact that I'm learning that I really don't like Force Blasts. I've just seen too many on target shots not kill things. That being said, his defense is sub-par due to a lack of balance, but his offense is good. The Force Blast is unreliable and less effective at longer ranges, but its still better than the smaller missiles, and the 38% rescue is quite nice. He's worth the 30pts, and I would call Gambit a useful figure.
#14 Thing--Thing doesn't look great on the surface. Downward smash sucks, he's expensive at 30pts and 50% Battle Cry isn't really all that special. Then you start using Thing and you find certain things out, like using him backwards as an uppercut, he's the most effective uppercut in the game by a lot. He also has defense comparable to Super Optimus Prime, and that is a very good thing. Strikers can kill Thing as well as anything, but a 30pt bulletproof striker can't help but be a threat, and 50% Battle Cry isn't a bad bonus.
#13 Captain America--There are a lot of things wrong with Captain America. He has fairly bad defense, is expensive, and has what amounts to a non-existent special power. But, Captain America is the most dangerous single figure in all of Attacktix. I've heard some people had trouble with shooting the shield, but I'm quite good at it, and can kill with it as well as any other launcher. Paired with being able to shoot and strike in the same turn, Captain America is a killing machine, though a fragile one with a target on his head. He takes some strategy to maneuver and protect, but if you can get him into position to shoot and strike in one turn, just doing that once justifies his 40pt cost.
#12 Abigor--Abigor is a deceptively effective figure. He has what amounts to a medium missile for 20pts, so thats decent offense right there. Abigor's true job though, is to die. 69% Attackback for 20pts is naaaasty, especially paired with the surprisingly effective Blackheart. Abigor also has a few other tricks, as he is the most unkillable tripod in the entire game, and is surprisingly hard to kill even after shooting.
#11 Hulk--There is a trick to hitting things with Hulk, but that is a topic for another thread. Suffice it to say, once you get the hang of it, Hulk is #11 on this list. It is truly an effective attack, and is deadly at any range. You get that barrel anywhere near an enemy figure and it will die. A glancing blow, deflected off the table, it doesn't matter. 46% recover comes in handy, and he has good defense with his heavy sculpt and large base. Despite being an expensive 40pts, I actually find Hulk most effective paired with another Hulk. My two Hulk, two 10pt Spider Man team did shockingly well in the games it played.
#10 Green Goblin--He was a 40pt figure that justified his cost. He's a little hard to aim if your not using him the cheese way, but my early opinion of the pumpkin bomb compares it to the Grievous missile. It seems to be that good. Capture, even at 38%, is never something to sneeze at, and I actually have a Green Goblin that sticks to his base like glue(though I have another that does not). The Green Goblin led team won second place in the tournament, only losing to my champion Battle Ravage team. Thats saying a lot for a 40pt figure on a 100pt team. Masterattacktix.com has even suggested a totally cheesy way to kill with Green Goblin, using his flying string and the shape of the Pumpkin Bomb to get the easiest base shots in the entire game combined with the power to base-shot kill even figures like Super Optimus Prime.
#9 Blackheart--I think people would be surprised to see him this high, but he dominated every game he was in. He's expensive at 40pts, and his strike isn't ever going to kill anything other than his target, but used correctly, Vanquish is incredible. The trick is that he has to hide until you get your first kill, so he can't be in your first wave of attackers. After that, you have a large based figure with 62% recover, just like Luke and Vader and we know how good that is. What makes Vanquish truly incredible is that it does not check for you having another figure in play. You can kill all Vader's friends and then he's defenseless, but Blackheart alone on the table can still come back again and again. This happened many times, and with his 12 speed the undying Blackheart won the game by himself more than once.
#8 Wolverine(prodder)--This is the weakest prodder I've come across, but its just enough to get the job done. He can kill Super Optimus Prime and Thing, so he passes the test. Moving beyond that, he's a fast 20pt striker with 46% Recover with good teammates to support the Recover. His effect is a nice bonus. His recover is below 50%, but is incredibly dangerous for his low point cost.
#7 Elektra--The Elektra/Daredevil swarm is one of the better Marvel teams. A 10pt striker with 50% Attackback for another figure is an offensive force. Her strike isn't great, and you can kill the Daredevils first, but she's still a dynamic team with him in any case, and they make for a truly dangerous swarm.
#6 Daredevil--The other half of the Marvel Knights swarm team. You can only beat this team by killing the Daredevils first. It can and should be done, but his Evade(Marvel Knights) can win his team the game by giving them a free turn. He also supports the other Marvel Knights, and is the key to the Daredevil/Elektra swarm which is why he is ranked above her.
#5 Western Ghost Rider--This is one of the most interesting sculpts in the game. While he has some weak spots where he's easy to kill, he's largely an impossible target most of the time. He's somewhat unbalanced and therefore succeptable to the base shot, but he can put his gun in front of his base to prevent that when not attacking. Vengence against figures other than the attacker is very dangerous and disruptive to your opponents game, and he targets Warriors which tend to be the most powerful class of figures in the game. Combined with a 20pt cost, medium missile and the ability to fit on anybody's team, he's a great figure.
#4 Beast--Probably the best 20pt army builder in Attacktix. He's a somewhat difficult kill thanks to being heavy and short, but his hand is heavy and unbalancing so he can be killed at times. What makes him powerful is that he's a 20pt traditional multi-killing striker, and his fantastic special power of Rally(X-Men) at 46%. This is the best Rally figure in the entire game, and it isn't close. His power is great in that he can Rally other versions of himself, and can also Rally other X-Men, two of which are very powerful in their own right. 46% Rally for 20pts has up to this point been unheard of in this game. Beast is incredible.
#3 Pole-Swinging Spider Man--As ineffective as this figure looks, his Teamwork effect will win games all by himself. Sure he's a lackluster striker, and somewhat expensive at 30pts, but three attacks every turn is game breaking. There are more than enough faction-neutral Marvel figures to put his Teamwork effect into play, even on 100pt teams. My Spider Man was paired with Thing, Western Ghost Rider, Electro and Avengers Spider Man for one extra faction for comfort. He's a striker whose at least effective enough to kill what he's aiming at, and the 12 speed lets him be an offensive threat when he needs to be. I've actually found I like the Rescue power, since its often more important for Spider Man to be out of the fighting since his effect is more important than his attack. His Teamwork effect works well even at 100pts, and I can only imagine it being that much more effective on larger teams.
#2 Ghost Rider--I still swear by this figure, rubbery chain or no. I have said this many times, but it bears repeating: You can ignore the rubbery chain by pulling the arm back at the elbow instead of at the tip of the chain. I find this works just as well as striking the normal way with lightsabers, and you can aim his strike to kill multiple figures as well as anything else. Once you can properly use Ghost Rider's strike, you will find that it is the most powerful strike in the entire game. I compared my two Ghost Riders side by side with S4 Darth Vader and Kit Fisto. The Ghost Riders consistently threw their targets farther and with greater velocity than either Darth Vader or Kit Fisto. It wasn't just a small difference, the Ghost Riders were stronger by a lot. In addition to the games most powerful strike, Ghost Rider is 20pts, 12 speed, has Vengence(Attacker) at 54%, and has the most effective tripod of any striker in the game. I like me some Ghost Rider. The only knock I have on Ghost Rider is that I'm not entirely sure how to use him strategically. His special power labels him a disruptive figure to send on suicide runs, but he also tends to be your best attacker and therefore valuable.
#1 Sabertooth--Sabertooth is just a fantastic bargain for 20pts. His strike is very weak compared to lightsabers, though you can kill multiple figures if they are fairly close and you know the trick. What makes Sabertooth incredible is the fact that he's an incredibly difficult missile kill thanks to how heavy he is, and the fact that 54% Recover on a 20pt striker is beyond ridiculous. There are some more expensive figures with better Recovery rates, but for 20pts each you can put a swarm of Sabertooths on the table, and that is scary. Among the recent sets of S4 Star Wars, Transformers, and Marvel we've gotten some truly great Leader figures to pair with Sabertooth in Blackheart, Green Goblin, Captain America, Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Super Optimus Prime, and Overhaul.
Thanks to the Spider Man Origins set using molds I've already used, I have some small speculations:
Green Goblin--Inferior to the other one in every way. Never use.
Doctor Octopus--His special power is more useful than the crappy stun of the booster version. Its a very low percentage though, and is still bad for a 30pt figure.
Armored Spider Man--I've found the Web Blast highly effective. 38% Battle Cry is good enough for 20pts, and this still has a large base! This is probably the best 20pt launcher in the entire game.
Spider Man--50% Attackback is incredible for 10pts, and unlike Elektra this Attackback can effect multiples of Spider Man. It'd be expensive to get a pile of these, and this figure still has a slightly unreliable strike and a nasty tendancy to kill his teammates, but this could still prove to be the gold standard of 10pt strikers.
