I've read Yaggleberry Finn's review of Thing on MasterAttactix, and find his words on Thing true. The best way to attack with these figures is to turn them facing away from the target figure, put the striking arm above their head, then pull the arm down behind them and release, as if it was an uppercut striker.
I just picked up Thor today, and find him to be of the same cloth. You can use their downward smashes in reverse as uppercut strikes rather easily, and I can't see attacking with them correctly ever being more effective.

My Thor's arm won't do this, how did you get your's to. Mine's cape seems to stop it. Even so He is still my favorite marvel that I have so far.

Move Thor's arm with the hammer forward (down)... it'll click once or twice - don't worry you didn't break it. If it clicks down so that the hammer is parallel to the ground - you've gone to far, go back up one click. Now push down on the hammer with your finger so that it's close to the ground, and let it slip off, and the hammer will "whip up" and strike upwards. I haven't used Thing yet, but imagine that it's similar to Thor. I agree with thecasualoblivion that Thor and Thing are better when swinging upwards, which at least gives you a chance for multiple kills.

The cape stopped the arm first before it got anywhere, then I applied mild pressure and I was able to get it back a little farther, where it can make an effective uppercut from behind. He ends up holding the hammer over his head in a resting position, and I can pull the hammer almost to the base with tension to release for a strike.
