|sf>At first, I thought that 3 Minicons, 2 Insecticons, 2 Battle Ravages, and one of each of the other figures would be enough figures to cover all the game figures (ie. a complete set to play all the special moves). After seeing some of the possibilities on here like the 9 Battle Ravages, I'm starting to have my doubts.
How many of each Transformer Trooper are you trying to collect for your personal collection? If you're going for more than one of the non-troopers, are you trying to collect more than one of the other figures to keep, for future trades, or is there another reason?

I had started a personal policy to keep at least 2 of each trooper. But I make a few exceptions. I usually do only 2 because sometimes additional versions are available later. Take for example the Grievous guards or the Royal Guards. Both of those came again later (and were much better as later versions imo).
But right now I have 3-5 of each Transformer trooper. I figure if a better version comes later, I can always let the extras go.
I think it's a tough call how many really should be kept. I'm just glad that Hasbro has made the more common figures both useful and necessary. It would stink if the collectible game made it so you could really only ever use a couple and got stuck with extras no one wanted.
Of the non-troopers, I'm holding out for repaints. If Hasbro chooses not to do some of the repaints that would make sense, I can make my own by customizing these.

It's hard to know how many figures one should have. A lot depends on what you want to do. I tend to get a lot of them. I figure they are collectable, so I can justify that because I believe that they have a resale value. But it is really hard to gauge how many to get. Some figures, like the Separatist Clone Trooper, I only need 4 of, but the Republic I have more of because of the amount of figures (and thereby teams) that are Republic. However, Hasbro could come out with a really cool Separatist Clone Field Marshal and then I have reason to want more Separatists.
I could kick myself for not getting more Emperor figures. I speculate that we will be seeing Mega tournaments (because they are so much fun), so the Emperor would be a good figure to have a few of on the side to help out.
It's a tough call.

I really like the battle ravages - I have 9 of them after trading here. That is ALOT though and I haven't used them all in one game. I generally like to have 6 of the trooper figures I like. Enough for 2 figs in back-ups and 4 on the playing field, since we typically have 200 point battles. If you play 100 point battles, I would knock it down to 4 troopers for needs.

I keep a good amount of each of my favorite troopers as well - for instance, I have 16 Battle Droids, 12 Jedi Knights, and 6 (working on 12) Wickets. The reason for this is that I like to have 12 10-pointers and 2-40 pointers on a 200-point team generally.
Now to TFs: As for Battle Ravage, I had 2 but gave them to my friend before he moved out to Florida (sorry Phoenix). He was cool in concept, but I wish instead of a string, he had a rubberized vinyl lash. When I wasn't disgusted with TFs I decided to get 5 Scourges, and that team was pretty good. I had collected 1 full set of chrome base, 1 of black base, and the extra Scourges. Unfortunately, I have like 25 extras, mostly troopers.
I guess it really depends on the figure's powers. Like I said before, I keep a lot of the BatDroids because they bring folks back, and I think Insecticons are one Trooper I could really never have too many of.

I always try to get at least 5 of each common (now rare) trooper...but then again, I like a lot of variety in my squads, and 5 seems to be about enough of any fig to do that.

I am with Webhead, I go with about 5 troopers. The only exceptions are Jedi Knights (I have 15), Shock Troopers (I have 12), Wickets (I have 12) and Battle Droids (I have 10).
I also agree with Phoenix, I love Battle Ravage! I currently have 7 of him and would never pass up on a trade that involved getting more.

I have this weird anal compulsion when it comes to the number of figures I collect.
1 of each "named character" (anakin, darth, luke, etc.) 10 of each "generic troopers" (clone troopers, battle droids, rebel troopers, endor scouts, etc.) 4 of each "specialty trooper" (scout trooper, clone captain, x-wing pilot, royal guard etc.)
I like having the 10 trooper count as I like to reenact huge battles from the movies but it is getting a bit crazy. Especially with the huge amount of "generic troopers" & "specialty troopers" on the Empire team... I'm running out of room for all of 'em!! And it doesn't help that they re-release figures. I started with 4 royal guards/scout troopers and now I have 8! It might be wise to cut the "generic trooper" number down to 5 or 6, like web and grey mentioned, but that's where the anal collector steps in. Oh well, I do loves me some 'tix.
(and I realize this is the Transformers forum but I felt it applied to the conversation,)

Then there's the question of a collector like me, who needs a playable set along with a complete display set.

I like to have 1 of all the named/main figures and 2 of the ones that a real hard to get In case one breaks. As for troops I like to have 4 of each one with the exception of battle droids, Jedi knights, and wickets. I will take as meany of these that I can because I feel they are the best 10 pointers made so far.

Even though your examples come from the Star Wars side, it still applies on the Transformers side since I was curious about numbers.

I wonder if we'll see a similar reaction when the Transformers' Strongarm hits the streets (assuming that his huge axe ends up causing a powerful strike).

I think that the big reason Wicket is so popular is that he's a 10-point striker with serious power behind him (and a nifty special power). If Strongarm's the same sort of 10-point goodness, I predict it'll be the must-have figure of TF S2 - and perhaps beyond (just like the SW S2 Jedi Knight is still relatively covetable).

Strongarm is one of just a few possibilites for a Transformers 10pt striker. The Insecticon action figure had a drill gun, that could split into two pieces which were a gatling gun and a sword. They could make a new Insecticon with a sword. There were some other small decepticons with melee weapons. Divebomb had a pair of blades that combined to form an axe. Cruellock and Doom-Lock both carried large swords. All of those are little figures like Insecticon.
