A good strategy using Optimus is to have both gold based and black based Optimus on your team. Also to have Super Optimus Prime Vehicle mode, so it can transform into both gold or black based Optimus. Another good strategy is to have 2 gold based Super Optimus Prime and a Scourge, because the Super Optimus Primes cant die no matter what is thought at them because of his effect. And Scourge because hes a good striker.

remember: optimus prime is very front heavy. while this is also his biggest strength (it allows him to bounce back from a heavy frontal blow), it is also his biggest weakness, because if you shoot him from behind that big heavy missile will help you tip him over. so when making an optimus-focused team, try to kill off high-speed figures before they get behind you!

Super Optimus Prime is not invincible.
I can and do kill Super Optimus Prime consistently from the front with the following figures:
Battle Ravage Megatron(Robot Mode) Super Optimus Prime(Robot) Landmine Skyblast(Robot) Overhaul Excellion
The energy blast figures require a good shot to kill Optimus, but can kill him at a fairly respectable range, and its not difficult when you get the hang of it. Landmine and Skyblast can kill Optimus at close to 100% if you know where to aim, and I've gotten so I can knock out Optimus at least nine times out of ten with Battle Ravage.
I also assume that Scourge and Scorponok can kill him just fine, though I don't have them. I also assume Vector Prime and Hot Shot could kill him as well, though these figures are crap and should not be used. I'm not entirely sure whether Starscream or Dirt Boss could do it.
As the previous poster said, I have seen kills with small missles on Optimus when hit from behind. Any frontal hit, even at point blank range and even a head shot, does not seem to be able to take him down with a small missle. Often when I am obviously going to lose a match, I just start trying to shoot down Super Optimus Prime with a small missle to his front, just to see if it can be done. I haven't killed it yet. I've seen point blank hits not even budge Optimus.
All this being said, Super Optimus Prime's defense is still tremendous, and is easily worth using even being a 40pt figure.

Here's a squad I'd make if I had the resources:
Squad (200 points) : 3x Gold-Based Super Optimus Prime 2x Black-Based Super Optimus Prime
Backups (100 points) : 2x Super Optimus Prime Vehicle Mode 1x Black-Based Super Optimus Prime
The idea is just to dominate with the five Super Optimus Prime's and just hope their powers come up white often. If you're lucky, one of the black-based Optimus's will "transform", giving you a Vehicle Mode which will most likely transform right back into Robot Mode.
Unfortunately, I don't have the purchasing power to make such a squad. If anyone actually has the figures required for this squad, I'd like to know how it plays.

I'm fairly new to this. What is the difference (besides color) between the gold based Optimus and the black based Optimus?

They have different special abilities. To be specific: Black-based: Available through booster packs. Special power of Transform (Super Optimus Prime Vehicle Mode) Gold-based: Available only through Intergalactic Battle Pack. Special power of Recover (Any).

Optimus is reasonably easy to kill with a shooter (small Missile) or starscream from 10 tix+ out if you clip his weapon (or arm) from a 70-130 degree angle.

Optimus is reasonably easy to kill with a shooter (small Missile) or starscream from 10 tix+ out if you clip his weapon (or arm) from a 70-130 degree angle. His defense isn't as strong from the side, though what you're describing would be a somewhat difficult shot. I've knocked down Super Optimus Prime with a direct frontal shot to the chest with Starscream and a few Star Wars figures with the medium sized missile, between 5 and 10 tix. No frontal shot from a small missile has ever knocked Super Optimus Prime down in my experience. I have killed Super Optimus Prime with energy blasts from Megatron, Overhaul, Excellion, and my other Super Optimus Prime at beyond 10 tix with a simple upper torso shot. Still your best bet aside from strikers.

Ah, but shooting is me speciality (voice from gnome in "Neverending Story"). It's not that hard as his arm is torso-sized, especially at 90 degrees. From 130 or more, they generally glance off.

Another strategy I just thought of, Its one of the most risky strategies ever. Use a Scorponok or Omega Supreme, and give one of your own SOP gold base a good toss to the opponent and knock over a few guys while you at it. This is the risky part, if SOP is white then he stands up right where he was thrown and then you have a fast, risky movement up the Field.

Yes, I found this out when I was reading some old posts. you can shoot your own figures and throw them.
