I bought my second Ghost Rider starter set after being impressed with the first, and I must say that my two Ghost Riders are wildly different from each other.
One is very stiff, and functions like any other striker. Its sturdy enough that you can pull it back and get a full power strike. The other is soft rubber and you pull it back and it bends instead of coiling the spring.
They're two different figures. That being said if you're a little flexible in your mindset, you can still use the bendy one almost as well. I've been pulling the chain arm back holding the arm instead of the end of the chain, and I've been able to strike with it hard enough to knock things into each other.
It would be much nicer if they were all like my stiff one.

Is there any notable difference between the two from outside of the package? I still haven't grabbed one and it would be useful to know if one has lighter details or something that may clue me in before I check out.

When I went to Toys R' Us and was deciding which Ghost Rider starter to get, I noticed that some of the Ghost Rider's chains were more bent than others. The arm is held down by a twist tie, so I'd just check and see which has the least amount of bend in it and get that. It worked for me and I've got one that bends about the same amount as a lightsaber arm, maybe a bit more.

A very strange thing has happened between the two Ghost Riders I first described in my original post:
They are now both stiff.
I played some games recently with my two Ghost Riders, and apparently the rubbery bendy chain has stiffened to the point where its pretty much identical to the other one. I can't tell them apart anymore. Maybe it was like Grievous said: It depends on how much they were bent in the package. The bent ones end up weak at first, but stiffen back to normalcy over time.

Whoa, that's a strange(and fortunate) discovery, oblivion! I'm thinking that it may be because the figure was put in the package and tied down before the chain stiffened enough, or something along those lines.

You got lucky... mine is still as bendy as ever We don't use him because it feels like it could tear the chain. I want to buy a new set, but I don't want ANOTHER bendy one... I hope this is something that gets fixed IF that is even possible.
