As I have come to understand it....Darth Maul was played by martial artist Ray Parks, who choreographed his own moves/scenes (which made it easier for him to look good when he controlled the camera...more or less).
Maul was probably the most entertaining of all SW characters, but I always felt the devil imagery was a little over the top.

If Maul was your favorite character, then I suggest you pick up a copy of Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. It really gives you a lot of insight into his actual capabilities, his birthplace, and many other things. Toss in many cool fighting and Force-use scenes, and you have one of my favorite Star Wars novels ever! Oh, and Radar, I do somewhat agree with your view on the devil imagery, but have you ever seen one of Maul's species without the black and red face paint? They look quite harmless, those Zabrak. The face paint was just added to make Maul look more evil and sinister. I guess they succeeded.

Maul isn't my favorite character in the movies, but I must admit this: Without Maul, not even the character of Qui-Gon Jinn could have salvaged Episode I . Maul made Episode I worth watching more than once.

They're called Zabrak. And yes, they do look rather foolish...

Ok.... So what I am getting out of this is that the black and red thing is not a natural skin tone for maul's character, it is actualy paint? And if the character did not paint his face in such the way that he did, he would have looked like that?

That's right, Malform. It's paint. The red symbolizes blood and death, whilst the black reflects the Dark Side, and the color of Maul's heart and soul. Normally, eh's a weird, fleshy color. Be glad for the paint, I say.

Ah, crappiness. Yes, my mistake. I always get the two mixed up. 'Twas what I meant. Thanks, devestator.

I used to play SW:KOTOR on xBox, there was a mechanic ( a Zabrak I believe) in the game you could get and have him be good or evil. In the game, the visual appearance of the characters changes due to how good or evil they are. I had always assumed this was the case with Maul, he became so evil, it began to over take him and change his physical characteristics. Of course this idea was developed before I knew the Emperor was disfigured due to an electrical accident and not for being a naughty guy. -Radar

The Zabrak's name was Bao-Dur, and was in KOTOR2. I think he could also become a Jedi Guardian, but I don't know how to do that.
