I was wondering if you wanted something to detach and reattach to the main figure, is it ok to use a magnet to reattach it?

"Okay" in what sense? Functionally speaking, it should work...Warhammer 40K player often use rare earth magnets to attach weapon systems to their units. I'd suggest pairs of magnets, both for strength and to keep the piece from sagging (it can rotate around a single magnetic attachment).
In a "tournament legal" sense, any customization is going to cause problems there, especially if you have removable parts.

Like making something like Skyblast a flying shooter by cutting him off his base and instead of messing with a plastic peice to hang on to the old base like Boba Fett or the Green Goblin, I could use some small magnets.

Hm... Assuming you're still using a string, I would say that if the magnets AREN'T too heavy, it MIGHT be okay...
That's just my opinion, though, and it has a habit of being wrong.

I don't really think that would work, what do you mean you are going to use magnets to help it fly?

Not to fly, it sounds like instead of using the peg method of mounting flyers to bases, he's suggesting magnets instead.
The key point to me would be whether or not the magnets would hold up to taking a hit...would the connection be enough to take over the whole base if the figure is hit?

Oh that makes a little bit of a difference. it just might work but i'm with jackpunch. i'm not sure that would be enough to keep him on the base

There are many type of magnets that would work fine for that. I used some that weren't too terribly expensive (think I got them at Walmart) to help keep my 11 inch tall claymation figures on the metal table we were animating them for a handful of NBA teams (can be seen here: www.mcapell3d.com/jazzset.html ). If it could keep my guys on the table if could keep an Attacktix on the base. Now if you wanted to go for the kind that are in electronics or rare earth magnets you have a hard time removing him at all, he'd stay on there tight.

You could put RE small magnets (from a craft store) in his legs, and use some small ferrous plates, like stainless sheet steel, to make the base. This would REALLY be better than the current post method, but chances are it'll be recalled due to swallowing the magnets and punching holes in the colon.

Actually, stainless steel, depending on the variety, can be non-magnetic.

Actually, stainless steel, depending on the variety, can be non-magnetic. What I did is got the magnets first then brought them to where I bought the metal to test it out, that worked pretty well. I would think that Rare Earth or similarly strong magnets would work fine, just glue it on well so it never sees your colon.

I'll be trying some rare earths out this week to create (hopefully) a shoulder swivel joint in a figure that doesn't have one as of yet...results to be posted...

Now this is getting crazy, but how about magnets as an attack mechanism? Make a little universal fit collar that you slip over your opponents fig just before you are in magnetic "attacking range" then Tix up and magnet grab! Interesting possibility for a Magneto type character! Obviously, just for fun and customs type stuff. Love to see the shoulder joint thing.

I'll be trying some rare earths out this week to create (hopefully) a shoulder swivel joint in a figure that doesn't have one as of yet...results to be posted... Finally found this older thread... I used the small rare earth magnets in an Iron Man Mark II that was on display at TixCon...it provided a swivel/cut joint at the shoulder fairly well. I used about the smallest ones I could find, and they could stand to be a tad stronger. HOWEVER, the next size up should be plenty strong for many uses, including flight stand modding. Pics to follow...
