After reading this thread I went on to ebay to see If I could find any prototypes, and while a few did catch my eye I have a small question. Is there anyway to tell the difference between a true prototype and a fake one that someone made?

Well, yeah, kind of. The prototypes look like homemade figures. They are essentially customs. What we see on eBay so frequently labeled as prototypes are actually just unpainted figures. They are kind of cool too, but they are not prototypes.
In fact, I would assume that the prototype goes through one or two changes before the mold is finalized, so if you see something that looks exactly like a mass produced figure, it probably is a mass produced figure.

Is there anyway to tell the difference between a true prototype and a fake one that someone made? I've referenced this article before but it may be helpful to you. It explains prototypes. What they sell on Ebay are most commonly "test shots." Many collectors want test shots in rare colors or just collect them for fun. www.moviepoopshoot.com/toybox/124.html
