Oh man, oh man, oh man!!! Is there anyway I could convince you to run this the same time (within a week anyway) of a National Dance Competition that takes place in Mason, OH sometime in June? We drove there all the way from stink hole NM last Spring and we'll probably go again in '08. I'll check with my wife on the dates. If so, you can be sure my son and I will be there, both days. Please consider a youngster Class, a Customs Class(just for fun) and a place to display Customs maybe. Wasn't there last year, so don't know how it goes. Got Soccer games to run to right now, more later.

Hope you can make it, this year's crop of customs has been outstanding, and there have been more people kitbashing than ever before.
If you end up coming to Mason, ConaChris and I are within 30 miles a piece and you could always hit us up to play with some locals. It's always fun to play with new people - find out how good you THOUGHT you were (see YodaBreaker whooping me senseless multiple, consecutive times).

I think you guys did a custom competition last time with figures?
What about maybe doing a competition on custom boards?

Yodabreaker would win....he has mine! ;D Heh - in fairness, I think in cases like yours, the competition should be judged on the designer of it, not the owner of it. Not unless the owner makes substantial modifications (I'd say far more than just putting a TIE Fighter on the pre-existing TIE landing pad and scattering some Battle Case turrets around strategic locations). In the immortal (paraphrased) words of Randy Jackson, "You gotta do yo' thing, dawg...make it your own."

Well, deep depression is setting in and that's what I get for getting overly excited : The dates for the 2008 Dance Competition are July 24-27 ( a whole month later than last year's), I could be there maybe a week or so before that. I guess going to King's Island again will be a consolation prize.

Ooo...another idea for an event that I had (after thinking about the Star Wars Miniatures game) was to have an event (probably a 200-pointer, but maybe only 150 points) with a Unique rule, in which one can only play with one copy of any named figure. That is, you'd only be allowed to play with one Obi-Wan Kenobi, one Optimus Prime, or one Spider-Man. And not just one version, but only one figure with that name on your starting squad, period. That is, if you had Starter 2 Optimus Prime on your squad, you couldn't have any other figure named Optimus Prime, including any form of Super Optimus Prime. Similarly, if you had Han Solo as Stormtrooper on your starting line, you wouldn't be allowed to have any other figure with the name "Han Solo" in the name label, whether it be "Han Solo" or "Han Solo on Hoth". Non-named figures would still be limited by the Rule of Five, in which a maximum of five copies of a figure with a given collector's number on the back label would be allowed on a squad in any way, shape, or form.
Now, the immediate problem I'd see with this would be backups: Should another copy of the named figure be allowed in backups? If so, what if a previous copy of a named figure could be put back into play via a Rally power or something similar? Here's my basic take on this situation. A player would be allowed to have only one named figure in any one area of the game at a time. Thus, if you have a Luke Skywalker on the playing field, you could have one copy of a figure with "Luke Skywalker" in the name in backups, and another in the defeated area (don't ask me how that might happen, given that logically it seems like you'd only be able to have two copies of a named figure on a squad, but go with me). However, you'd only be allowed to have one copy of any one figure (identified by collector number) on your squad in any way, shape, or form. This set of rules would allow powers like Recruit and Transform to operate sanely, so as not to discriminate against figures that have them, without allowing a regress of Recruiting the same figure (e.g., G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi). Furthermore, if a special power would call a figure into an area of the game in which a second figure with that name is currently occupying, the first figure would be removed from the game (not defeated, but removed from the game, as if to rectify a severe temporospatial anomaly).
Here are a few 100-point examples, with a team comprising one copy of S1 Shaak Ti and G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi on the playing field with 4 Jedi Knights, with S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi in backups. This team is legal because the two copies of Ki-Adi-Mundi occupy different areas of the game.
If your opponent knocks down G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi, then knocks down Shaak Ti (who's white), G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi would be spirited off to the defeated area, and S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi would be brought onto the playing field at your starting line. Sometime in the future, S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi gets knocked down and is white. a) If you choose to Rally G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi, he'd go back to the starting line, and S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi would take its place in the defeated area. However, if S2 Ki-Adi-Mundi gets knocked down, he gets removed from the game entirely, because S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi is occupying the defeated area. b) If instead you choose to Rally Shaak Ti, then S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi is removed from the game entirely, because G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi is already occupying the defeated area.
Now, from the same starting team, if Shaak Ti were knocked down first, and G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi were still in play, then S1 Ki-Adi-Mundi would be removed from the game straight from backups - do not pass Go, do not collect $200 - because G2 Ki-Adi-Mundi is already occupying the playing field.
Here's another set of examples, using a 160-point Autobot squad comprising S1 Super Optimus Prime vehicle, S1 Hotshot, one S1 Omnicon, and S1 Omega Supreme (yes, I know Megas aren't tournament-legal, but again, go with me on this), with SVT Super Optimus Prime and 4 S1 Minicons in backups. You'd not be allowed to have Starter 2 Optimus Prime in backups instead of the 4 Minicons because two figures with a name including "Optimus Prime" would be in the backups area. You could choose to include him instead of SVT Super Optimus Prime (in hopes that Omega Supreme would bring him into play), but it'd limit the possibilities too much for purposes of this example. Also, you couldn't replace the 4 S1 Minicons with another S1 Hotshot, because you've already got a copy of S1 Hotshot on your squad.
Let's assume that S1 SOPV goes down first and is white, bringing SVT SOP into play and S1 SOPV into the defeated area. a) If Hotshot's the next to be knocked down and turns up white, S1 SOPV gets shuttled out of the game, because there's already a Super Optimus Prime occupying the playing field. b) If the Omnicon's the next to be knocked down, followed by Hot Shot (who's white), then the Omnicon is the only one that would be allowed to come back onto the playing field. c) If SVT SOP is subsequently knocked down and is black - er, tan - SVT SOP is removed from the game, because S1 SOPV is already occupying the defeated area.
Now let's assume that Hot Shot's the first one to be knocked down and is white. He goes into the defeated area, and though his power has no target to activate, he just stays there like a good 'bot. If Omegs goes down next, you'll have to bring one of the Minicons onto the playing field, because SVT SOP would get shuttled right out of the game. However, a knocked down white S1 SOPV would then be able to bring SVT SOP onto the playing field.
I hope these examples have shown the main ramifications for the style of play I've proposed. As I wrote these, I started to see that Marvel would be seriously disadvantaged in this style of play, and even Transformers might be disadvantaged, on account of their lack of non-named cheap strikers. Thus, this would likely have to be a universe-specific event. Maybe this could be run in lieu of or in addition to the 100-point universe-specific events?

I like the idea of a "Uniques" game, but I think that there would have to be some leeway on the figures that are playable. I agree on the fact that if you have a Super Optimus you couldn't have an Optimus in play, but I think that if you have an SOPV on the field, who is killed and then brings the SOPR into play and by some method the SOPV mode is called back into play WITH SOPR on the playfield that it should be allowed. We can't really undermine the standard game rules too much to make a more 'universally coherent and constant' character continuity. Better to just make a list of figures that are not allowed to be played on the same team and go with that. The main reason is that if a capture comes into play, it would be possible for one team to have two instances of the same named figure, and then the person who does the capturing is put at a marked disadvantage, siding on the unfair if they're forced to dismiss the figure.

Someone asked if it will be at the same hotel, and the answer is, it depends on attendance, but probably not. I'm trying to find a large hall with plenty of room, and there are a couple in the immediate area of where the event was last year.
However, it's important that I have a very good estimation of attendance first, so this time I probably will open some pre-registration...stay tuned.

When I had a competition one time at my house we did a sort of "relay".
What we did was divide into groups of 3. Each person picked 100 points to make their squad. So each TEAM has 300 points. First players would compete. After the first game was over the person who won would keep his REMAINING figures and return them to the starting line. Then he would play the next person in line until his squad is finally defeated. Once it is then the person next in line steps up and puts his squad into action. Now each team is on their second person, but the second team is down a few figures (presumably) due the the first team (hopefully) taking out some of the second teams figures before his squad was finished off. You just keep going through each member of the team until you finally defeat all 300 points!
We had a lot of fun with it here. One match we didn't even use our 3rd person on our team. We whooped the second team with only 2 squads.
This could be lots of fun and promote each of us to cheer one another on. ;D

greyelephant, I like this idea a lot, and you're right that it'd help create a more collegial playing environment. A couple of questions:
1) Can special powers work on previously defeated squads? That is, can Vanquish pull from an opponent's squad that's been utterly defeated? Can Rally revive figures from a previously defeated squad on your own team? 2) Is there a set order in which all the squads are played (i.e., in one team, one squad always goes first, followed by a second, followed by a third), or can it change up between matches?

Thanks, I am glad you like it. 1. Essentially you are on a team, but your squad is YOUR squad. So no, you can't vanquish or revive members of your own teammate squads. Basically you are on your own, but you do have others counting on you to win or at least knock out as many of the opposing figures as possible. Once the first round is over, the loser removes all of his figures from the playing field and the next opposer steps up. Both sides reset their figures at the starting line and begin again. The deal now is that the winner is stuck with only his figures that were standing when the first game was won. 2. Each team should consult with their members to try to create matches that they think could benefit them the most. For instance, if you knew that your opponent has a newbie going first, maybe you would want to make your top dog go first to try to cream him and not lose many figures. Or maybe you have an idea as to which squads you are going to face and can maybe match up what you believe to be a better squad of your own to challenge them. For instance, if you knew someone was coming at you with S2 striker GG, then you could make sure that your first squad you use wouldn't have any warriors in it so that you could make GG obsolete. Same goes for Tarkin or Plo Koon. This can give you an advantage, but that is IF you know what your opponents squads are going to be. Theres a good chance you won't. We played girls vs boys. I had my nephew go first that had the least amount of experience, followed by my second nephew how played better. I came last and we did very well. The second time we played, I went first. I was able to knock out 2 opposing squads before the third finally defeated me. What was kewl was that I still had two teammate left to fight what remained of their last squad. We won in a landslide. What's fun is if you keep as much under your hat as possible to throw off your opposing team. Don't let them know anything about who they are going to face or what the squads will look like. Otherwise they can try to change up on you. It's lots of fun and sure makes you pay close attention to what's going on during battle.

I would think it would be in the best interest to send in the worse player first to try to 'soften up' the enemy, then send in the 'cleanup hitter' to go in full strength and finish the game.

I'd like to echo Yodabreaker's sentiments in saying that the "relay" idea sounds like it would be a lot of fun.
Anyways, to me, it seems like deciding who to send in first is dependent on who your opponents send in first.
If my opponent is sending in their strongest player first, I would absolutely send in our weakest player followed by our strongest player. If the weak player is able to take out even just a few of the strong opponent's figure, that'll make my side's strong player have an advantage and take less losses.
If the opponent sends in a weak player, I'd send in our mid-level player. They should be able to take them out with minimal casualties while keeping the strong player ready for tougher challenges.
Finally, if the opponent sends in their mid-level player, I'd send in our strongest player to get them out of the way ASAP followed by mid-level and then weak. The theory is that the strong player will trump the mid-level but take losses. The strong player then weakens the next opponent before letting the mid-level player pick up the scraps. Mid-level should be able to take out a fair amount of the final player's figures before sending in the weak player to end the game.
That's just my theory, though. I've never played "relay" but it sounds like a lot of fun with lots of strategies showing up in the games. Recover would be KING in said game.

There are a lot of theories that can be made. You have to remember one thing, in the game of Attacktix even the weakest can become the strongest depending on specials being activated.
So yes in theory, you would want your strongest to be able to remove at least 150 pts. If he does that, your odds on winning are greatly increased. If he takes out less, then you are putting too much pressure on your weaker compa's. Your mid level guys should be able to hold his own at around 90-110 points. Weak link then would only be left with around 40-60 points to fight against.
The trick is how are we going to assemble teams? Drawing? Randomized numbers? Wait until after we have a competition and then see who finished where and then group them up? It's hard to say.
How many people showed up at Tix Con this year?
