TixCon is only a few days away if you can believe it...I can't. Now that we are in the home stretch, I want to have this thread just for answering frequently asked questions. Please...questions only in this thread! I'll respond with answers, and will update this first post (or the main post) as I can. - B
Q: What is gunslinging?
A: In a gunslinging event you get to challenge someone like myself or Joe Manzo to a battle...win, and get a good prize fig. These are pick-up games and not a tournament in and of themselves per se.
Q: "Force Movement", ok?
A: We'll be using the 1 Tix = 1 Inch rule...if there is a problem, a judge will use another fig to remeasure the distance...full moves should be within one tix or so when remeasured.
Q: Is there anything nearby for my family to do while I'm playing?
A: Sure. There are plenty of places to eat, some nearby shopping and a movie theater. There are also some nice malls about 10 or 15 minutes away. Family members who are not participating are welcome to also observe the event and will not need to pay an entry fee.
Q: What does the entry fee cover?
A: All of the events for the day. I expect to have tons of prizes, including door prizes and random drawings. The fee will go towards paying for the cost of the event.
Q: Is there an age limit?
A: Absolutely not! If there are enough younger players, we will possibly run an Apprentice event alongside a Master event. We should also have some people on hand that can teach the game to new players.
Q: What if my figure is messed up or modified?
A: These will be case by case decided by judges. Simple mods like repainted lightsabers would probably be allowed for example.
Q: Who will judge the custom contest?
A: All attendees can vote on the custom contest. Customs could be repaints or hand crafted figs.
Q: If there is an age break, what will it be?
A: Probably 12 and under, 13 and up.
Q: What Tix should I bring, all of them? Just teams?
A: Bring all of the figs you'll be entering in events, some replacements if you have them (spare missiles or backups strikers if you are prone to breaking them), and your trade stuff. Beyond that, you might just be hauling extra weight around. The more figs you have to keep track of, the better the chance you could lose track of some of them.
Q: Will everyone be allowed to enter all three Universes in the 100-point tournament "Choose Your Universe Challenge" or will we have to pick just one?
A: This will come down to a decision on the day based on attendance. If attendance (and therefore) time allows, you will be able to enter multiple universe events.
Q: In any of the official tournaments, will the players be allowed to change their teams after each round, or will they have to keep the same team throughout the entire tournament?
A: For each event, you need to continue to play the team you started the event with. Exceptions will only be considered due to figure breakage, at the judges discretion. The exception will be the Choose Your Universe finals, where players will play sealed teams that are provided as part of their prizes instead.
Q: Will there be tournament figures available to win?
A: Yes. I have a huge box full, most if not all of them will be given as prizes. Some will be auctioned off, and some will be door prizes
Q: Is there going to be a way that we can avoid playing our teammates in the early rounds. When I say teammates, I mean the people I game with normally that I'm making the trip with?
A: I'm not adverse to splitting up teammates in the first round, after that I can't make promises. Make sure everyone on your team or crew marks their scorecards with the same team name or list of members.
Q. Finally, I want to bring my video camera to hopefully tape some great matches and hopefully improve my game. Think that will be a problem?
A: Shouldn't be. I expect at least one other videographer, the notacomputer crew.
Q: How will the battle royale between the three universe winners go? Three-match round robin? Three-way free-for-all? Something else?
A: Three way free for all with modified rules that will be announced at the beginning of the match. As noted above, sealed teams will be used, so thinking on your feet will be tested as well.
Q: I have a figure that broke previously and I have repaired. Would it be legal to play or do I need to fix him again?
A: Judged on a case by case basis. A judge will need to test the fig and decide if it is close enough to factory grade. Figures that break and are repaired during the event will have a better chance of being allowed than those that arrive at the event in an altered state, if that makes sense.
Q: Can I use newly released figures on my teams, like the Spider-Man 3 set or the new TF2 starter figs?
A: Yes, all figures will be legal for play (following the rules provided of course). The small number of new figures out now (around 6 - 10?) shouldn't have an unbalancing impact on the hundreds of older figs already released.
Q: Are Chirpa curling and Hulk bowling two separate events?
A: Yes, though neither is overly formal. I believe at nota's event the winner walked away with a chrome Chirpa and bragging rights.
Q: The Charity Auction for Toys for Tots, should I bring in toys or money?
A: My plan is to make a single donation on behalf of the event via check or whatever. If you want to donate items either to the Auction or directly to Toys for Tots, I'll handle that as well. So far I have some product for auction, some tourney figs, maybe some protos, and a few other pieces I'm still trying to track down. If anyone wants to donate their customs or repaints to the auction, those would be accepted as well. Also, if you want to pay for your auction items via check, just write it out directly to Toys for Tots and I'll pass it all along.
Q: What are the formats of the 100-point and 200-point tournaments? Bracketed (Single elimination? Double elimination?)? round robin? Swiss? What's the setup of each match within the tournies? One game matches? Best two-out-of-three? Three of five?
A: This is all TBD by attendance, as time is the only real limiting factor. I'm preferential towards Swiss for the 200 point event, with a finals. (Single game matches.) For the 100 point events, it will most likely be straight single elimination, especially if we can have everyone enter multiple universes. The alternative is to run re-flights for those that are eliminated early or drop out after losses, basically starting new side events with prize support througout the day. The goal is to have stuff for everyone to do, even if you aren't in contention for one of the "main events".
Q: I have a rules question...
A: Check the FAQ here on site, it's probably answered there. If not, ask it here. The basic answer to the specific question that spawned this is, the controller of the defeated figures decides the order in which they resolve. The full complex answer is in the faq.
Q: Are we playing on tables, the floor, on chairs?
A: They have standard folding tables in the room. I'm looking at some nice 4' x 4' particle boards to use on top of those to standardize the surfaces a little more. I'll be bringing as many of those as I can afford to (at about 5.50 a pop, not too bad really.) Speaking of which, I'd probably sell them back to people that want one at cost after the event. *shrugs*
Q: How big of a playing area will we have for each game?
A: Standard games will be 3 x 3, unless we become pressed for space on the tables, in which case we will make arrangements as needed. For the gunslinging event we will have a special map available that is a custom size with 3d terrain (buildings and vehicles), that will be made available for finals of events if players agree to use it/want to use it.
Q. Does the hotel that TixCon is being held at have Wi-Fi access? If so, is it guests-only or can those who enter the event go online as well?
A: AFAIK there is wi-fi that should be accessible from the meeting rooms. (I plan on using it.)
Q: Can you use a totally repainted figure in the tournament?
A: I'm going to just make it easy and say no. Like I said, little things like paint touch ups shouldn't be a problem, but we are trying to avoid 1.) confusion for your opponents as to which figures you are playing and 2.) the chance that it significantly changes the way the figure plays in some way.
Q: Will we be able to buy some booster packs there?
A: No. However, if you need some last minute packs or want to arrange a sealed game, there is a Target and Wal-Mart in the same mega-complex.
Q: Is there a rough schedule for the day?
A: Yes, the Choose your Universe event will go first, then the Auction, then the Main Event. Everything else will sort of be on the fly.
Q: Attendee driven side events, how will that work?
A: Get a group together (4 or more players) and decide on a format. If everyone is in agreement, we'll provide prize support as supplies last, depending on the number of players. And to be clear, something like a round robin coin flip to see who wins a tourney fig is not what I'm talking about.
Q: Which tourney figures are available to win?
A: The new set, T6 - T10.
Q: "Tix Counting", legal?
A: I'll try to pin down this rule by the weekend. I'm hoping it wouldn't be a problem, as it does go against the spirit of the game.
Q: If the special window was half white,or barely white at all but still has some showing, will that count?Or does it have to be completely white?
A: Per the FAQ, advance the wheel until the window is full of whichever color it is actually "on", if you 'tix, tix back one, and it should be lined up correctly. In a pinch, call a judge.
Q.Will there be extra outlets there to plug in things that might need to be charged?(Ex:cell phones,Nintendo DS,etc.)
A: Notihing specifically setup. I'm guessing their are outlets somewhere in the room, I plan on using some for my computer equipment.
Q: Auction...what type, during what time of the day, donating customs...
A: We've decided on some sort of silent auction, which will easily allow for donated customs to be added to items (since they can all sit out for the bulk of the day), two birds with one stone so to speak. Keep in mind, you do not have to donate your customs! However, if you take pride in your work and bear to part with them, it could be a good ego boost to see how much others are willing to pay for it...
