I've used Castilene before and it really is good (and cheap, really). You can really smooth it out by using a pen-torch as well.

I've been having a lot of trouble recently getting started with wax, but I read this today on a sculpture website "i know people in the toy industry sculpt un supersculpty, then mold it and then pour wax into it to do final details"(Sculpture.net).
It's so simple, I'm suprised I never thougth of it. Make a clay figure, make a silicon mold of that figure. use the mold to make a wax figure that can be fine tuned, make a silicon mold of that, create multiple epoxy copies from final mold.
