Happy Monday! And good morning to all of you. I wanted to spend a couple of minutes reviewing the DC Fighting Figs...I was finally able to pick them up this weekend. I'll be adding pictures and/or video as able, but for now I wanted to run down all of the figs, and talk about them both in regards to their own line, and how they relate to 'tix. I'll also look at them by attackt type, as that seems to be the most logical breakdown.
In no particular order...
Two-Face (gun swipe): This version of Two-Face has a very familiar attack, a sweep similar to a traditional jedi lightsaber attack. His range of motion (rom) is about 90 degrees...so he's powerful enough to topple any of the DC figs (whose bases are all the same footprint). He will also work as a straight transplant to 'tix...simply swapping bases should be all he needs to accomplish this. A great looking figure as well.
Batman and Robin (batarang launchers), Joker (evil grin gun): All three of the "standard" launchers have nice looking weapons and flavorful projectiles. However, power level wise, they are all somewhat weak. Even at point blank range they are unable to topple all of the figures in the set. (Darkseid is particularly probelmatic because of his size.) Of the three, Batmans seems to be the strongest. HOWEVER, with that being said, they still have decent range...so, if the DC game was intended to be more of a game of tag (similar to original Marvel Legends game) they would work fine for that. On the 'tix side...these figures would be hard pressed to knock out medium or large based figures with any regularity. (DC bases are closest in size to medium 'tix bases, for reference.) If these figs were to be translated, I would recommend weapon swaps of the like we have seen with some of the customs. Luckily, each figure is obviously "posed" correctly.
Darkseid (Apokolips tech toss) and Two-Face (coin toss): both of these launchers are both similar and vastly different to figures we've seen in Tix. Each does the overhead throw, but the throw starts out with a rocker mechanism in the base. My Darkseid projectile was a little warped, and is taking some getting used to, and Two-Face, while he has some good distance, I need to practice the aim. Both have good potential though, especially Darkseid, who is both very large and heavy, and has a large and heavy projectile. It should also be noted that both could be converted to strikers by affixing the weapons to the hands and leaving the arms down, so that the rocker mechanism pushed the item forward and into opponents.
The main challenge for converting these two figures into 'tix would be the fact that the attack mechanism is built into the base itself. However, I'm sure that with some minor surgery, a decent method of adding these on to a tix base could be designed.
Superman (soar) and Catwoman (leap): The "flick flight" mechanism is probably my favorite new attack of the bunch. We've seen this already in the promo Superman, and this new version is essentially the same, with only the base being molded slightly different. The flight stand is also tinted ever so slightly blue, as opposed to "clear" in the promo. That being said, my Catwoman base is not quite as tight as the new Superman one, but I'm guessing that is just a variance in the manufacture. Catwoman is also much lighter a projectile than Superman, but she has her arms spread giving her more reach. Each is capable of toppling all of the DC figs with the proper aim and range. For tix, they should work fine (as I've demonstrated in the past), with the same problem as above, since the mechanism is in the base, some surgery will need to be done to move these figures to 'tix bases. (Also, I would tend to rule that a flick flight figure should be returned to the stand after attacking, and is defeated if knocked off, wether or not the base is toppled, just due to the unusual setup of the base.)
Batman and Batgirl (rocker-punch): These were a surprise hit (pardon the pun) for me. Even though the rom of the rockers is not very much, there is a satisfying attack as a result. The Batman figure is a much more solid attacker due to his greater size, but Batgirl seems capable as well. Batman is able to dispatch any and all figures...Batgirl may struggle with some, but will still make contact with precision. As with the others...since the attack mechanism is in the base, translation to tix will take some work, but the potential is there. I would also like to see some customs taking advanage of this attack and the "flick flight" base.
All in all I'm happy with the figures. They all look great, with plenty of attention to detail and great paint apps (for the scale). For their own game...which will be left to those of us who wish to devise such a thing, I feel there will be a slightly different take than what we are used to with 'tix. Based on the power of the projecties, I'm guessing that Battleague was meant to be played more for "points" for each hit, with knocking the figure over outright not necessarily part of the game.
As for additions to Attacktix as customs, there is plenty of fodder here. The scale is as close as needed to correct, and some of the figures will be readily adaptable.
I'll check in later with some pics and video. - B
