[quote author=admin board=trans thread=1168489094 post=1168537050]As for the rest of this bunch, I am still a little shocked to fully generate an opinion. I never would have expected to see Whirl. That mold has been used 3 times, with Whirl being the most recent. But it wasn't really a main-line transformer. It definitely shows that we can expect some obscurity in the future.

I am optimistic that the leaders at Botcon will be a part of a starter set.

I dont understand how Whirl's mold has been reused 3 times... Are you referring to the wrong figure?

Seems like everyone is worried about missing out on those G1 prime and megs figures. Let us not forget, that for some reason hasbro tends to not include starter figures in the gallery. Thus far they have only included some of the marvel starters, but they have never included any star wars or transformer starter figures in the gallery.

Yeah, that's definitely Apex Optimus Prime from Heroes of Cybertron being used as the inspiration for the recolor, not Fireguts, Burning, or other Japanese recolors.

I'm definitely going with G1 Prime and Megatron being in a starter, Starscream robot and Energon Demolishor being split between the starter and partnering with a new Mega. Which leaves one more unseen Autobot for the starter. Given that Whirl doesn't have Transform, I'm not thinking he'll be seen in robot mode in this wave.

Oh, about Whirl. He first appeared as Thunderclash in Europe, during the year there was no TF line in the US. Then he was recolored (and his gimmicks neutered for safety reasons) as Sandstorm in the Machine Wars line in 1995. He got recolored again as Whirl for the Universe line a couple years ago. That's three uses of the mold as a toy, not as an Attacktix.

I think I have Grimlock figured out. He's a BITER!! Look at the button on his 'stomach' it's right above that 'rock' in front of him. I think if you tip him forward, rotating at the hips, that button will be compressed by the 'rock' causing his mouth to close. Perhaps you then stand him back up and release/drop the opposing figure or give the base a twist and throw the figure. It looks like Hasbro liked my Rancor ideas ;)

Yeah, Whirl was a wrecker.

Anyway, about Grimlock.

That would be awesome if he did bite, but it doesn't seem to me that his jaws are big enough to grab much of anything. Plus, with the way he's shaped, it looks like it would be pretty awkward to then toss a figure.

His tail could be his weapon. Maybe you push his head down to trigger that button on his stomach and make his tail swing, or snap out to the side to close-line the enemy (attacking with his back facing the opponent).

sfx5000, I know your much closer to Hasbro than most anyone else here could even hope to be, so don't take my second opinion personally. Just a thought ;D

My guess for Grimlock is that he'd be a headbutt-style prodder. If you look at the neck closely, it looks like it might pop out like a prodder.

Yes, it does look like there's room for his neck to move. But, at the level the figure would have to be tilted to trigger the button, is his head going to be in range to make a kill, or will it over-shoot?

I forget if Universe Whirl is in the neo-Wreckers from the BotCon comics, but the G1 Wreckers version of Whirl was a different mold, one of the non-Takara ones that Hasbro snaffled up mainly to keep Bandai from being able to use it. It came from the Dorvack series, IIRC, and has been bootlegged in several places, including a French line of cheap model kits.

I'd love it if Grimlock were a ranged attacked and simply launched his head entirely. :) And if he IS a Hardhead-style (BWNeo) head-butter and I get extras, I may look into modifying him to launch his head....

I think that the set looks nice and all, but I count 10 repaints. That is over half of the set is basically the same figures many of us already have.

Yes, I counted the same. Soundwave looks to be Rodimus from Series 1 and that OP, you can just keep, he's pathetic. Don't know if I really want this set if this is the best they can do.

With that said, I reeeeeeaaaaallllllllyyyyy love Grimlock. He was always one of my personal favorites from G1.

Before anyone jumps on greyelephant, he meant Checkpoint. :) And the original Checkpoint toy is a recolor of the Energon Rodimus toy, so it's apt. The actual character recolors, like Checkpoint (and Excellion from S1) I don't mind so much. It's stuff like Omnicon being recolored without a new name, or "Thrust" being pulled out of some cost-cutter's hindquarters that bother me.

I think a major difference between TF and SW is that many of the different characters in TF _are_ repaints of older characters. Simply put, Ghost Yoda is just a repaint of Yoda, making just another VERSION of Yoda. But Checkpoint and Rodimus are two DIFFERENT characters... correct? And if the original source material for the two character are the same mold, then you can blame them for using the same mold in this case either. (Now if you want to blame them for re-using the same mold in the first place...)

I am sure the argument can be made that Galvatron and Megatron are the same character... but I still think that repaint is warranted. I mean we all love to see NEW molds, but if it means more series in the long run I think that is better!

Actually I'm as close to Hasbro as you or most people on this site are (minus Webhead who does some work for them, of course). I was just kidding around because I designed a Rancor that bent over and bit people. He even had a button on his stomach but it did something different. Your thoughts about the tail and thecasualoblivion post about a head prodder are great guesses as well and out of the three of us I think one of us has to have it right.

ETA link to nifty digital Rancor custom :)
