SFX's Toy Shop #1: JAR JAR BINKS
« Thread Started on Jun 1, 2005, 9:11pm »

Hey gang, welcome to the Toy Shop!

As you can tell by the great threads about game play variations and future figures, Attacktix lends itself to creativity. I've had a few ideas rattling around for awhile and I thought I'd share them with you. Think of them as figure mods, but instead of paint & clay I'll use ones & zeros.

First up I thought I'd tackle the dilemma that is... JAR JAR BINKS! That's right... I said it! I was inspired by the Jar Jar poll and thought that there had to be a way to get people to play a J.J.B figure. Unlike most I don't hate the fella. He's not one of my favorites, but I don't want to see him die in some horribly gruesome way. He was a character that had a lot of potential, but was handled poorly.

When thinking of a Jar Jar Attacktix figure the worlds 'striker' and 'launcher' don't jump immediately to mind. So, what could the Jar man do? Here's my take on it. I give you...

JAR JAR BINKS
(original photos via Rebelscum.com)

Jar Jar has 2 major features...
1. ARM/LEVER
2. COLOR WINDOW

How does he work?
A. by pulling down on the ARM/LEVER you cause the...
B. COLOR WHEEL (red/green) to spin
C. the COLOR WHEEL can be seen through the COLOR WINDOW
D. when the COLOR WHEEL stops your color is revelaled

What does this all mean?

In the Phantom Menace I found Jar Jar to be very distracting (and since you can't add an 'annoyance' or 'murderous rage' variation into the game) I figured I'd work this angle on his figure.

You field Jar Jar on your team just like any other figure. He moves when your team moves, but never takes any other action during your turn. Instead, after your opponent moves his figures, but before he fires a shot you get to 'spin the wheel' and turn Jar Jar's arm. If the color in the window is green your opponent can fire at will. On the other hand, if red appears in the window you opponent must direct his/her entire allotment of shots for that turn at Jar Jar!

Think of him as the anti-R2 D2 (the R2 attacktix figure is rumored to have a numbered spinner that can give your team extra shots). This way Jar Jar fills out 2 very important functions. One he is actually a useful (and hopefully fun) figure. And two, everyone will have the chance to unload a barrage of missiles at his squishy head!

This way you can actually build strategy around him. From the simple and obvious: Send Jar Jar as far away from your main force as possible and let him take some heat. To the more useful: Surround him with a wall of battle droids. The more your opponent knocks over, the more you may be able to pull in from your backups. To the ones that will piss people off: Place him behind a Mega and let them absorb all of your opponents missiles (and frustration)!

Plus, I don't want there ever to be an Attacktix figure that makes people respond in any of the following ways:

Cry
or
Immediately tape the booster back up and return it
or
Feed him to the family pet
or
Death by bunsen burner
or
Crush him like an ant under your boot! ;)

Well, that's it for today's Toy Shop! Join us next time for...

Wow...beautifully done. And the rules...oh, the rules...they're truly inspired. My only question is this: Does he have a special power? Perhaps he could Recover if you have any Jedi in play (recall Qui-Gon's save of him in the start of EpI)?

This is is incredible! Will you be making him or the comapany? Will he be in future packs or available only from you because belive me i will be at the top of your order list!

Yodabreaker i love that idea especially because without a Boga to or battle driods to stand in the way, he can only last a little while so he will fit right in with the rules.

Bravo. Great decoy concept. Like Episode I, Jar Jar brings comic relief to Attacktix...

;D

PS. What do you do if Jar Jar is your last character alive?

YodaBreaker- I was toying (no pun intended) around with the idea of a special power, but didn't want to over design him seeing as I was just digitally doodling and he won't ever be made (this way at least). Recover is a GREAT idea though. It would make him a little more fustrating to play against (which is his point anywho).

padiwan- I won't be making any of him. He just exists in the digital realm. As for Hasbro, if the line is successful I could see him being produced one day. Weather or not they make him like this is up in the air, and more than likely 'not'.

ProgMatinee- I'm not sure about what would happen if J.J.B. was your last figure. What I do know is that your opponent isn't doing their job! We'll have wait to see what rules apply to R2-D2 and the Medical Droid in Series 2. They are both to be 'non-combat' figures and should give us some answers (and more inspiration, of course).

Glad you guys like him. Just wait for Jabba, I've got some suprises up my sleeve!

SFX,

I was cursing you and the other poll thread for even contiplating and giving the thought of a Jar Jar figure any validity at all. I don't even want to think about or consider the posibility of a Jar Jar Attacktix Character. I would NOT buy any booster that had a chance of him being in there.

That is until I took the time to actually read your extremely well thought out rule set to go along with the actual figure.

I agree with you that EP I handled this character extremely poorly and because of it have a bad taste for him.

I LOVE your ruleset for this character though! I actually would love the strategy that you have invoked with your examples of ways that this could be fun and useful.

I applaud you for taking something that most despise and hate and actually creating a unique, valid, and FUN way to inccorporate it.

I actually hope that you submit the idea to Hasbro, and that it somehow finds it's way into upcoming ruleset.

God help me for saying it. I must be sick, but I actually LOVE this whole idea now, and that was a tough sell!

Thanks again.

And Lonestar, I'm glad I changed your mind. But, the idea actually came from another idea I had for a C3PO figure (C3PO would have the same rules but a huge base to show that he was in numerous battles, blockade runner, endor, battle arena, etc. and almost never went down!) So, the figure can change but it's the function/rules that go with the figure that count.

I do remember the discusion now about the 3PO rules, but thought of it more because he always ended up getting shot in the movies, rather than the annoyance factor for Jar Jar.

I always liked 3PO though while I really despise Jar Jar, so that was a much tougher sell! Kudos for a well thought and well planned idea. I would buy it. I especially like your droid army stategy. I need to start figuring out a way to incorporate that more often now.

I was just thinking (as I've been known to do... from time to time) that this power would be great for one of Padme's Handmaidens.

(photo via Rebescum.com)

It would have to be tweeked a bit. Instead of having all of your opponents shots fired at her perhaps just one of your opponents shots must be fired at the Handmaiden. Add more Handmaidens and possible re-direct more shots. There would be a special rule that if you are playing Padme and a Handmaiden that if that Handmaiden's spin is successful that Padme cannot be targeted at all that round. Her special power (if white, of course) would be 'Attackback: Free move and attack for Padme.'
